Meet Belinda Lima - Painter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Belinda Lima.

1. Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?

I was born and raised in London, England. I’ve always loved art but decided to study Medical Laboratory Sciences at Paddington College in London where I trained as a Medical Laboratory Technician and later worked in a Pathology Laboratory in Ashford Hospital in Surrey, England.

In 1989 I moved to the Bay Area with my husband and 2 sons and have been living here for the last 35 years.

When both my boys started school I found myself with some free time and was able to pursue my interest in art. I started with drawing and watercolor classes and continued to explore other mediums. I remember taking a workshop by world-renowned artist Charles Brommer on collage, watermedia and design and fell in love with the medium. I believe this was a turning point in my work and career

although I had several other outstanding instructors over the years.

Six years ago I was given the opportunity of sharing a studio at The Alameda Artworks and now have my own space there. I love being part of a community of artists who inspire me and help me to continue to grow.

2. Tell us about your art and the inspiration behind it?

I am a mixed media artist working primarily with acrylic and collage. I’ve recently discovered and enjoy painting with oil and cold wax and am enjoying to explore this wonderful medium. I find my inspiration from urban life, skylines, structures, and the human figure. My paintings are mostly abstract and depict the urban life, skylines, and structures that I am drawn to.

My goal is to capture the essence, mood, and feel of a place, city, or figure while using minimalism, color, and texture. These days I especially enjoy working in larger formats and working on 3-6 paintings simultaneously. I enjoy that every painting creates the opportunity for new discoveries, growth, challenges, and learning experiences. I love that some paintings are created with seemingly minimal

effort while others are more challenging. It’s usually in the challenging ones where I find I can dig deep and create my best work.

3. Any news you want to tell us about?

I am an award-winning artist and have been accepted into National and Statewide exhibits including the Triton Museum of Art Statewide show in Santa Clara, The California Watercolor Association, The International Society of Acrylic Painters, The Left Coast Juried Exhibition 2022, and the San Diego Museum of Art Artists’ Guild Online Exhibit 2023.

In 2023 my painting “City by the Bay” was one of 54 selected from 5000 entries for the Art 2 Life International Exhibition and was awarded an Honorable mention by juror Anita Rogers from the Anita Rogers Gallery in New York.

Several of my abstract paintings are currently on view at the recently opened Community Bank of The Bay, 956 The Alameda, San Jose.
